The Lola T70 Mark III

The #37 Lola T70 Mk III pictured above was campaigned by John Woolfe Racing of the U.K., driven by Denny Hulme at Silverstone in 1969. Hulme eventually passed Brian Redman to win the race. Team owner John Woolfe later purchased the first privately owned Porsche 917, an imposingly powerful machine in which he was tragically killed during the first lap of Lemans 1969.
![]() | The decal set to the left is from Pattos Place, and a portion of the set features the livery of the Jonh Woolfe Racing team. (Yellow stripes with the #37 roundels) The real car that was raced at Siverstone appears to have worn a generic royal blue colour, with several options available from Testors and Tamiya. Testors paint is oil based, and seems to take fewer coats to achieve a nice finish. Tamiya paint is water based, requires more coats, but seems to be more durable. A simple solution for the wheels was to use a standard issue set from Matchbox, the ones they use on their current line-up of vintage cars like the ones pictured at the bottom of this page. They're a simple deep dish in black, with a chrome ring around the outside of the rim, and an inner chrome knock-off hub. There was a set of GoodYear decals left over from the Brabham decal set that will work well on these tires. |
Searching for a restoration candidate, this lot of 2 Lolas was discovered on eBay for $12 including shipping. Initially, an attempt was made to recreate the cars in American International Racers livery, the team campaigned by actor James Garner at Daytona in 1969, but the colour was too light. Testors oil based paint was used, which seems to be more delicate, and more susceptible to damage caused by the oils from your skin when handling the car during decal application. Also, the decals are difficult to apply to curved surfaces. If you read Pattos website preamble (which I foolishly did not), you'll see that he recommends the peel and stick decals over the waterslide ones for this reason. This is another reason why the Garner cars didn't work out. | ![]() |
| There is very little info on the internet regarding the John Woolfe Lola. I found this reference pictures of another scale model on eBay. The royal blue used on the Garner cars will work much better on this car. The decals should work out nicely as they will all be applied to flat surfaces.
